I am in Larnaca and it counts so much to me. I don't think anybody has loved his hometown as much as me.
It is always memories that come to mind when I am in this beautiful city. I believe I began to appreciate this place after I lived for so many years abroad.
Years back as a student I had no idea how lucky I was to be living in such a beautiful city, -a city of so much history, the most ancient city in Cyprus….a hidden gem in a small island.
I only realized it some years back when I came to Larnaca as a tourist and not as a local, and I still believe there are people from Larnaca who have never realized how precious this city is.
I unpack, hang my few clothes, put on my gym shoes and join the rest of the people on the beach-pathway
I return to the suite two hours later and find all the lights on and on the table a platter of fruit, and champagne. Of course the champagne goes back to the kitchen waiting for further notice until I arrange to share it probably with a friend or relative.
Lunch is a feast here, but I confine on the salads. A middle-aged couple sitting opposite me attracts my attention, acting as if they have never had food for a month. They each come with a plate full to the brim, leave it on the table and go back. In minutes they return with another similar one, and then leave again and return with dessert and fruit before even touching their lunch
An afternoon walk follows and this time I start from the beach path, walking all the way to the last hotel in line, and through a path leading to the main road. This road is full of restaurants, supermarkets, hotel apartments, café bars and pubs. There is a side road for pedestrians and bikes. I reach the hotel a little before sunset.
The plashing of the waves down the coast even with the door closed was so pleasing to my ears that made me sleep immediately. I woke up with the same sound at dawn and got outside in one of the balconies. The colors in the swimming pool down the garden were changing every some minutes from red to green and then back to normal and I must have sat outside for more than a quarter of an hour enjoying this peace and beauty of the premises among palm trees and other plants in the resort.
I get back in the room now leaving the balcony door wide open, letting the gentle sea breeze fill the room with oxygen. I snuggle in my bed, close my eyes and soon I am asleep.
