Getting to the Mountains by lorry

Sometimes the idea of traveling around as a real tourist on a budget excites me, and this morning it is one of those days.

On my previous trip I was happily surprised when I heard that the Bus service on the island has become more frequent and more reliable as from last summer. Bus routes extend to almost every small village not only on the foothills of the mountain range, but also up to the top square of Troodos! One such trip to any of these destinations costs only One Euro! Unbelievable but true!

The lorry I caught from Limassol is going to Troodos, so I thought that it would surely pass through Pano Platres. Instead it comes to Kato Platres and then after a 15 minute stop leaves directly for Troodos.
To make my story short, I am picked by Agi my friend and owner of the Semiramis hotel who owes the Village Restaurant who drives me to Upper Platres to the hotel I picked to stay this time.

Kato Platres is a much smaller residential settlement approximately 3 kms from the main town centre of Pano Platres. There are not more than 250 people living here during winter but in the summer months this number can swell to four or five times more.
The name derives from the Greek word platia, meaning plain area, as the place has many flat fields in between steep, mountainous terrain. Of course I found one or two other etymologies but I picked this one as I find it the most logical conclusion.

The majority of locals are occupied in the tourist industry and a few with fruit cultivation.

The central square of Kato Platres seems interesting with a number of restaurants however the Upper Platres is much more beautiful and more interesting.
