The Myllomeri Falls
The Myllomeri Falls are a few metres higher than the Kalidonia Falls, yet the latter are more popular.
Anyway, this is one of the reasons I took the earliest bus and came here as I had no intention of losing the whole day.
Platres is my little paradise as I call it, a place of great beauty and peace.
So after checking in at the hotel, I come up to my room and have a cup of coffee at the balcony which overlooks the beautiful gardens of the premises, and without even unpacking my suitcase I am out, this time heading towards the Myllomeri waterfalls.
I have no idea if I manage to reach the falls today but surely there will be other times
The sky is partly cloudy, and I am out without my anorak. I hate carrying anything…it is just my camera and some wet napkins.
I am wandering for more than 15 minutes when I reach the 200 year old Oak tree of the village. There is a sign leading to the waterfall but just opposite the path I find an old lady in her garden. I greet her and she offers me cold lemonade. It is indeed very kind of her and of course how can I ignore her! I happily accept. I can understand that she might probably need somebody to exchange a few words with, so I kindly offer to spend 10 to 15 minutes with her. She tells me that it will take me less than 2 hours, but she advises me to avoid walking all alone, and if I see nobody out there to return. She probably thinks I might get lost. Of course hiking will be more pleasant with other people around.
I am soon walking down the steep path towards the river and I already hear the gurgling of waters
There is so much beauty out here, the singing of birds, and the aroma coming in waves in the air…..what more to expect!! Just being out here means so much to me. I stop for pictures every now and then. The family is well ahead but when we come to a certain point and the kids need help I get past them. For 15 minutes they are much behind but at least I can hear their voices.
Suddenly as I move deeper and deeper in the forest the passage becomes a bit more difficult and I can hear them no more. The worst of all is that there is nobody else around and it seems that I am the only person out here today.
Even without the family following I keep walking, but I begin to have second thoughts the moment I hear a peal of thunder in a distance. I look up ….I barely see the sky from the luxuriant vegetation, and I decide to return before it starts raining. Of course as an optimist I am sure it won't be long when I am back again. I can surely come in autumn!
It is obvious that I am a little disappointed
I don’t want to return, not even go for lunch yet. I prefer to go round the village.
It is 4.30 when I come to the "Village Restaurant" for lunch and I am walking since 11:15 a.m. Agi is surprised to see me coming in so late for lunch. He tells me that he expected to see me much earlier, and I tell him what I had been doing all these hours.
My friend is a specialist on Traditional Cypriot dishes and his restaurant is very popular not only to locals but also tourists. There is not a single day without a coach or two with people coming to eat here. I am lucky that two coaches had left an hour earlier otherwise I would have eaten out with crowds.
The food here is fresh and always tasty
I refuse to have coffee at the restaurant as I want to get to the hotel before it starts raining.
I reach the hotel some minutes after 6:00 pm. and it is time for my afternoon cup of coffee and some rest. 'Rest’ means sorting out the photos of the day. I avoid watching T.V or listening to the radio, even answer phone calls when I am on such trips.
I hear some thunder but no lightning and the first drops of rain start falling. I take my cup of coffee and sit outside. I sit and just watch the rain fall while the birds continue singing. The fine smell of wet earth mixed with the aroma of pine trees and other plants on the premises is blowing in the air
No dinner, no phone calls, no T.V.
Just relax and make plans for tomorrow.
