What a joy to be up here and walking this path! I am excited even if I got lost a bit. There was another couple following me and when we got further into the forest we approached each other and together tried to find our way. Two or three times I called Agi who was trying to spot where exactly we were but without success!
Anyway, the views we had from the top of where we reached after walking for more than an hour on the opposite direction of course, and far away from the waterfall, were panoramic indeed.
We were walking upwards, and even if we had a guide book with us yet we got lost. I guess this happened because deep inside me I wanted so much to lose my way that morning
The waterfall is a bit outside Platres inside an all green area. I have read that the name must have come from the English and Scottish who, when they visited the area around 1878, were reminded of their homeland and named it 'waterfall of Kalidonia'. You see, ‘Kalidonia’ was the name of Scotland in ancient times. So the name remains even today.
The waterfall is one of the highest that exists on the island, and it falls vertically from a height of 12 metres.
Every now and then we have to walk across the river, and each time there is somebody who leans a hand for help. On one point however I was taking photos and the others moved across the river so I had to pass the water stepping on some very small rocks. Suddenly one shoe goes in the water but the freshness I felt made me from then on walk across stepping in the water instead of looking not to wet my sneakers
I took several photos, and I believe I won’t write more. The photos I have taken can tell of the beauty out there. I am lucky that I am going back to Platres again in a month’s time and I plan not only to come to the Caledonian waterfall but visit some other paths as well.
I left the hotel at 10:00 a.m and I came back at 2.30 p.m although a bit tired, but pleased with the day’s exercise I had.
In the evening I had dinner at the ‘Village Restaurant’ which belongs to Agi, the owner of the hotel I am staying at. He kept me company while I was having lunch and we talked of different things about the island, Platres and its popularity. Everyone wants to come back!
The food is wonderful here, the portions big and I was surprised that everything is cooked by Agi himself who got his secrets from his Mum’s cuisine he told me. The restaurant is always busy daily as different coaches bring people out here
