Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery

I am happy when I see the sign leading to Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery. I remember my Mum mentioning this name when I was young but when Costa drives me here nothing reminds me of those days. Of course I am talking of probably more than 35 years back, so it is ridiculous to believe that I will recognize much. The area we are now in is about 1.250 metres above sea level, and about 40 kms north east of Paphos.

Set in beautiful surroundings, this monastery is dedicated to 'Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate' found the 12th century AD. Its present building dates back to 1770.

Upon entering I notice a sign giving the dimensions of the very old pine tree on the right hand side of the monastery which is 130 years old.  As it is huge, bent and heavy it is supported by a cement construction.

Before entering the monastery there is a sign suggesting that visitors entering should respect the area and not enter scantily dressed. Women can usually find pieces of cloth or skirts right in the entrance provided by the monastery to cover  legs and shoulders in case they wear short outfits or wear sleeveless t-shirts.

The monks of this monastery have a winery and make some of the finest vintage wine in the area. One of the names of the wine sold here is called ‘Monte Royia’.

The other nearby monastery we are visiting today is that of ‘Agia Moni’. It is just a few kms from Chrysorrogiatissa. It is the monastery of Agios Nikolas.
