Where I stayed
Gabriel's House in Kato Drys
The house I am staying in is a 200 year old building fully restored.
I love staying in such houses with so much history and I include one or two stays at such houses each time I visit Cyprus.
The apartment has two rooms, and it is really huge. There are two single beds in the first room, a bed side table, a chest of drawers, and a dressing table next to the 4 stairs of the entrance. There is both air conditioning and central heating.
It feels cosy as the heat comes through the floor
There is an arch in the centre of the second room and what I really love is the combination of the stone walls and the color of indigo in different parts of the apartment. All these can travel you to another era. I can spend a week in here by just sitting and writing! It is really very beautiful and every single penny spent here is worth it!
The kitchen is fully equipped and there are all sorts of tea and coffee brands to choose from. A tray of different tea pots is by the side wall. There is halloumi for me in the refrigerator, home made jams by Eleni, honey, bread, tomatoes and cucumbers, a bottle of milk and 2 jars of home made deserts. All these are for breakfast. On the big table there is a bowl full of fresh fruit from the family’s orchard.
There is a fireplace in a corner of the huge room but it is just for decoration
There is a beautiful garden with colorful flowers with huge crocks scattered here and there, that joins my apartment with the family’s classical house. At the other end of the apartment I stay, there is another smaller apartment with a stone paved courtyard. Everything looks so perfect and the hospitality of the owners is the best. It is the kind of hospitality that one can find in these restored traditional country houses. And I recommend visitors who come to Greece spend at least two or three days in such houses before going back.
Many tourists think that Cyprus is a summer destination. Well, it is not.
Out of the experience I have since I was born and brought up here, the island of Cyprus is a year round destination with many hidden gems scattered all over, beautiful and authentic and very different each season
the village I am visiting today is one of those gems and I cannot wait to explore it.
Come along because Gabriel is expecting me to leave everything and continue our sight seeing together……!
