ELENI'S WARM WELCOME
Yet another stop to the small Church of Aghios Neofytos just a few kms from the medieval village of Kato Drys before we go home.
It is the birth place of Aghios (Saint) Neofytos, a significant figure of the village. The saint was born in 1134, and Gabriel tells me that he will show me later on the house the Saint was born.
We find a man working inside and repairing the church so I decide not to take a photo of the interior
The view of the village and the whole countryside from up here is stunning. I can't wait to explore it. It reminds me of Vessa and Mesta, -the medieval villages in Chios that I visited this year.
The big church of the village can be seen so clearly from up here and Gabriel tells me that it is dedicated to Saint Charalambos. Of course there are other smaller churches which I am soon going to visit.
We get in the car and drive off. It is obvious that we are heading towards the house, but oh no……Gabriel wants to show me more. He is just as excited as I am, and he tells me details and names that at this moment I cannot hold in, but I am sure later on I will take out my note book and write everything down.
He wants to show me the beautiful church of Aghios Charalambos, and we pass next to it and then we come to the house.
Gabriel's house is one of the three houses with columns, - a classic residence built in 1934.
Eleni appears at the doorway with a huge smile and open arms
She is so humble and open hearted.
We go straight in the dining room where the table is set and we are soon enjoying each other’s company as if we knew each other years back. This is the hospitality I am talking about in my entries. This is the way Cypriots greet and make you welcome in their houses.
I love the mushroom dish Eleni prepared for me, and Trachana soup which is considered to be the national soup of Cyprus and is very nutricious. I love this soup and usually we add small pieces of halloumi in it a couple of minutes before served. Ingredients: (a mixture of crusted wheat –groats, and yoghurt). Goat halloumi, and traditional sausages from the area …..all typical Cypriot cuisine. And of course fine good quality red wine!
Note: Greeks and Cypriots avoid eating meat and dairy products on Wednesdays and Fridays, and as it is a Wednesday today, the couple who are quite religious have the beans vegetable soup
