The Larnaca District Museum

The Larnaca District Museum is only 50 metres from the hotel and it is a museum that

I never had the chance to visit since I left Cyprus in 1974. I guess today is my chance to visit it

before heading for my house to see Mum and relatives.

The entrance fee is 1.70 euros, but unfortunately cameras are prohibited.

The collection of exhibits goes back to the Neolithic age up to the Roman period, and in one of

the two rooms there are sculptures and terra-cotta figures – mainly female torsos.

Mycenean vases, pottery and a big collection of different ornaments in bronze, glass and clay are

exhibited in the second room.

An authentic tomb and the skeleton found in one of the houses of Choirokitia is exhibited in this

museum, and when I see it I consider including Choirokitia in my –must see list before flying back

to Greece.

It is pity that I cannot take a single photo, not even without using a flash, but at least I can take some

photos of the numerous torsos of statues found in the garden.

A bit further in the same area and behind the garden, on a hill called Pambula excavations in the

1970's brought to light the ancient port of the City-Kingdom of the archaic and classical years.

The port is in a better condition than any other ancient man-made port ever discovered, but to see

it one has to get the permission of the Director of the Larnaca District Museum, and I just

tried to take a photo of it from a distance because of lack of time.

Excavations seem to have stopped though lately….probably because of lack of money. I have no idea.
