                 "FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELTS"

I am on board the plane heading for Cyprus and sitting by a window next to a British lady of about 45. I am working on my laptop and I notice her watching me every time she looks through the window over my shoulder. She seems to be a good lady, pleasant to be with and sweet, and I admire her delicate hands when she offers me a wet tissue.  She is probably not sure whether I speak English or not, and I see that she carries an English Novel in her handbag.

“Is it possible to have a Greek Newspaper?” I ask the air hostess in Greek.

“Oh no, I am afraid I just handed out the last copy.  Do you mind if it is an

    English one instead?” she replied.

“No, I don't mind at all.  It is fine with me. Thank you”, I said.

The moment the lady sees that I start reading the English Paper, she introduces herself.  Paula is very talkative and excited and I understand that I have to leave behind what I had been doing till that moment, so I stop everything and I am all ears and try to share this excitement with her.  One question after another, - questions about Cyprus, probable fears because she is traveling alone, and this goes on till the moment we land.

It is her first trip to the island and she is spending a week in Larnaca. With all this pleasant conversation neither of us notices that we are already flying over Larnaca’s district.  The Salt Lake of Tekke looks so beautiful below, and we are 2 minutes before landing flying over Larnaca Bay and the Fishing Marina (Psarolimano) with the beautiful sailing boats.

Oh! Yes…we have made it.

One or two persons at the back of the plane are cheering and clapping.  The majority is trying to connect their cell phones, and some are already talking to their people. I could never understand this hurry.

As we touched down in Larnaca, a voice came over the tannoy: “Welcome to the island of love” and we all disembarked with a smile on our faces.

The lady asks if I have time to meet her again in Larnaca one day, and I gladly arrange to meet and show her around.
