The monastery of Kykkos, is the richest and most lavish of the monasteries of Cyprus, found in the region of Marathasa. It is situated on the mountain peak, at an altitude of 1.318 metres northwest of Troodos. It is dedicated to Panagia(Virgin Mary), and was founded sometime between the end of the 11th century, and the beginning of the 12thcentury.

It possesses one of three icons attributed to Saint Luke the Evangelist. The icon, covered in silver gilt, is in a shrine made of tortoise shell and mother-of-pearl that stands in front of the iconostasis.

The monastery is also famous for its museum, located within the monastery grounds, which houses an impressive collection of icons, woodcarvings, manuscripts, and other Cypriot antiquities.

The area nearby Troodos mountains with magnificent hills and valleys is the home to 9 Byzantine churches, included on UNESCO's Heritage List, and richly decorated with murals and Byzantine paintings.

The first President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archibishop Makarios III, served here as a novice.  At his own wish he was buried on the summit of Throni, 3 km west of the monastery, and not far from his native village of Panayia.

The monastery holds religious fairs on September 8th, (Birth of the Virgin) and August 15th (Dormition of the Virgin).

How to get here:

Air: Paphos International Airport.

Road: Road to Pedoulas which leads to Kykkos (from Troodos); road north towards Platres, past Pedoulas to Kykkos(from Limassol); towards Limassol, then northeast past Kedares to Platres (from Paphos)

We are here this morning after breakfast.  For many of my Greek friends this is their first visit up here.

We are driven to (throni) first, and the view is stunning. The beautiful vegetation of the area and the whole atmosphere of the place, pleases my friends.

I try to take as many photos of the area while up here, and my friends are looking for me.  I always have to walk much ahead of them as I don’t want them to spoil the photos.  Usually I am asked to take them photos, and they stand posing, which is something I want to avoid.

Actually I am trying to find a fine spot, to take a picture of my travelpod pot.
