"Lefkaritika Kentimanta" - Lefkara Embroidery

I love staying at the Lefkara Hotel and Restaurant when I am out here and I don't change it for any other. I honestly feel like home.

I am free in the morning until midday so I don’t want to rush. I have my light breakfast with the company of some Americans who for some years have been living in Cairo. We chat about different things and it is always nice when I come across interesting people.

I have an early appointment this morning, to get to the house of Mrs. Kola and take photos of her amazing laces “Lefkaritika”. I had a quick glance at them the previous evening but I thought my photos will be much better with the daylight.

I am made welcomed at Chryso’s house where I find the two sisters waiting for me to join them for a cup of Greek coffee. Since I just finished breakfast I thanked them and said no but the ladies insisted that I should take something.

The home-made fruit desserts – we call “glyko tou koutaliou” are very popular in all villages. How can I resist when I hear that they have a home-made apricot dessert! So, her sister rushes to the kitchen and comes back a few minutes later with the dessert in a tray.  Many of these home-made delicacies are to be found in the market and in many villages. You should try them. Honestly they are delicious!  A number of restaurants serve them after lunch or dinner as a treat.

The local lace:

Lefkara’s history goes back to the 12th century when the town was considered to be the largest in Cyprus. All this lace tradition was handed down from mother to daughter generation after generation. These masterpieces are called “Lefkaritika Kentimata” in Greek. The best pieces are embroidered on pure Irish linen. In the past antique pieces bared some color but not anymore.  Today’s embroideries are done on natural color linen with white or light brown thread.

I have dedicated several entries on my other guides about Lefkara for those of you who wish to have a look I have the latest links below:

I ask Chryso if she can take an order but she does not. Of course there are many ladies in the village, many of whom you can find sitting outside their houses or little shops and they work on their lace. Of course I know several of these but I don’t wish to have names and phone numbers down on my entry for several reasons and to avoid misunderstandings.  In case somebody is interested to order something, contact me and I will advice accordingly.

NOTE:  Press on the photos to see the detailed and exquisite embroidery work.

It is truly amazing to see such effort being put into each and every piece. I wish that someday I could sit and observe these ladies working their way through every piece. Thanks for bringing this lovely work of art to our attention!
