This entry is from our short visit some days back to Kalamos in Evia.
The waters here are crystal clear and have the turquoise colour while the beach has rich white sands, very different to other beaches in Evia. This beautiful bay is washed by the Aegean Sea and is quite popular with locals. You won't see many foreign tourists because they still have not discovered this little gem here. It is one of my best spots for swimming in summer.
As you see it from above the road it is a picturesque little bay with a few tavernas and one or two very small hotels and rooms for rent
There are two small successive beaches here. In reality there are two bays separated by a huge rock and other smaller ones. Usually locals prefer the beach on the left hand side because the landscape and sand is flat while on the opposite side the sand forms a slope and the waters are a bit rough. On this second beach the sand creates a slope and there are times when you find tents even though free camping is supposed to be prohibited. The municipality is to blame and is responsible for this. The owners are usually youngsters who come from Athens or other parts of Greece to spend a few days here. There are no trees or bushes by the way and I guess the owners of these tents find shelter in the few restaurants the rest of the day till late at night when the sun sets and gets cooler -otherwise it is not possible to step in the tent even for a second!
Don’t expect to find shallow waters here –with the first step you are in deep waters. I love this wild scenery and this is what makes it unique.
There are two or three small hotels and rooms for rent as well as a few tavernas and café bars which serve local food, pikilia with ouzo, fresh fish and different fresh salads
For people who want to come here, Kalamos is in the southern part of Evia. From Halkida take the road towards Vasiliko, pass Eretria, Amarynthos and Aliveri. It is about 57 Km from Chalkida. When you come to the small village of Neochori you will see the sign with the name "Kalamos", and “Achladeri”. Take this road and in about 2 Kms you will come to a crossroad in the village of Perivolia. Continue on the right and drive straight on. Kalamos is about 5 kms from that point on.
If you take the road on the left you will get to the village centre of Perivolia and this road leads to the village of Achladeri where there is another beautiful beach but I will tell you about this beach on another entry.
In all the drive from Halkida to Kalamos is about an hour and 10 minutes.
