We came to Karystos for our afternoon stroll since it is only a 15 minute drive from Marmari. The new road is much shorter and wider. I remember years back the road was narrow with many blind corners.

Karystos has a picturesque harbor with a jetty and a quay as well as a promenade shaded with rows of trees. On the upper side of the promenade there are all sorts of café bars, restaurants and small 'ouzeris'.

Ouzo is a popular Greek drink and there are these Ouzeri restaurants, much smaller and more picturesque, many times decorated with fish nets and shells outside. I have seen a number of these in both Marmari and out here. They serve fish meze or pikilia. Both words are Greek and they actually mean –a variety of anything.  It can be a fish pikilia so you will be brought a variety of seafood to nibble and enjoy your ouzo with.  It can be a leg of grilled octopus, squid, mussel, prawns and many more in smaller portions. The small harbor is a guarantee of fresh seafood. The same stands for Marmari where we stay.

The funniest of all is that as I am writing about all these I have the taste of ouzo and the smell of grilled prawns in my nose!

Bigger restaurants are more formal and fish here can be expensive. Bottled wine is served here which can be expensive, while at Ouzeri smaller restaurants one can ask for a carafe for much less.

What a lovely place to unwind!  This is actually the reason of our visit.

There are several neoclassical public buildings and traditional houses along the promenade with the many restaurants and as it gets darker more and more people show up. The night is mostly inviting for this outing!

There is a group of young boys trying to catch some fish on the quay and I go there and start talking to them. They show me their catch and they are excited and in a hurry they say before it gets dark to catch some more and take home. Of course the fish they catch are tiny small but for them it is fun and a nice way to keep busy.

There are other fishermen scattered all over, much elder people who seem serious and concentrated on their catch but I did not want to talk to any as I know from a friend fisherman how annoyed they get in times when they go out to fish if one tells them –Good luck or tells them anything about their catch. I don’t want to get into trouble, and I walk pass them.

(In Cyprus we don’t have this, and we can wish a fisherman a good catch, or make any other comment). Here in Greece it is different, especially if you comment before and during their catch they consider it jinx or bad luck.

One can visit the ruins of the 13th century Castello Rosso (castle) or visit the old mines at Killindri with the outstanding views!

Of course we are not doing either of the two. We are here to unwind and I can’t wait to watch the beautiful sunset. I love the colors of the sky and I always have my camera ready for a shot. The result of the photo I have taken though is not that promising.

Yianni suddenly wants to have some gyro but for me it could only be some pikilia and ouzo or NOTHING!  Of course he cannot find gyro at an Ouzeri, and it is either visiting two restaurants, or join him for a kebab which is really what I do in the end. So it is beer instead of ouzo that we have this evening!

Beautiful pictures! It just reminded me when I was a boy I used to catch fish like this. I still miss those days. Now there is no more because of pollution and urbanization. Good description of the spots. I wish I could visit. thanks.

Wao you have very lovely photos and the place is very beautiful.
