My visit to the Venetian Castle

It is afternoon and I am here to visit the Venetian Castle of Karababa which dominates the hill of Kanithos. I want to take some pictures from up here. There is a theatrical performance in the castle yard this afternoon. The seats are ready, and people are expected to arrive shortly. I want to finish and leave before the crowds.

I climb up the walls to wherever I have access of course, and I am lucky because it is still light. Up on the terrace there is a photographer with a couple and a lady who is helping him. The couple is posing here and there and the lady is wearing a long white dress. It can't be her wedding dress, but there is a possibility that they are experimenting on future photos.

Now a few things about the castle I am visiting.

Its purpose was to protect the city from the Venetians and this was the reason that it was built in a strategic position controlling both the Strait of Euripus and the city. Traces of buildings and graves were found and for this reason it is believed that it is the ancient town of Kanitho.

The entrance to the tower is from a narrow archway which looks like a labyrinth. Inside the enclosure there is the Chapel of Prophet Elijah built in 1895 and it is well preserved. There are also two Russian cannons of the 19th century.  The south-east side of the wall is surrounded by buildings of a military nature.  There is also a bell tower built where the emergency bell of the fortress existed.

You can find the word Evia written also as Euboea.
