The springs of Acherontas

We come to Gliki, an hour's drive from Preveza passing through mountains and valleys with lush vegetation and much greenery. It is a touristy spot ideal for trekking, rafting, kayak and riding. There are two or three Restaurants very close the river bank with one small hotel. I believed at first that we would walk to the river springs, but when we stepped down the coach we were told that we had only one hour for a short stroll as there was no time to walk to the springs! Much later, and only after we returned we are told that we are to have lunch here at one of the two restaurants. Of course I could have skipped lunch if I knew of this.

I am very disappointed when I see how beautiful this place is and only have time for a short stroll, but this is what happens when you come along with a group. The scenery is indescribable and the impressive mood of nature gives magical experiences to the visitor. I wish I could spend the whole day here!

A large group of young tourists are much behind but shortly they get past us. They all seem excited and their giggle and laughter is heard all over the place. They come to the river bank and for a few seconds they stand out there amazed by the beauty. I believe it is the moment of concentration. The water is freezing cold and as they step in the water they get even more excited. I only wished I was on my own without the rest of the group. I would surely be out with them in the water that moment.  It is fun watching them as they walk towards the river bed. The tide is strong and there are times when they have to balance and they grab each other’s hand at those moments. In some spots the water is deeper and some of them are drifted for some metres while their friends try to help.

In all it is an interesting sight even if you just watch.

Of course, I want to take all the advantage I can out of this short stay here. I walk along with another couple further ahead of the rest of the group, walking much faster and drifted by the beauty of the place. Much later, we notice that we have to hurry back, and we do this because we don’t want to keep them waiting.

The moment we returned out of breath, we have no idea that we are going to have dinner at one of the two restaurants! We are so angry realizing that we could have walked to the springs since we were so close, and delay a bit for our lunch.  We get a seat at the restaurant with the others at first but I am so angry that I decide to leave and go to the other restaurant with Yianni and my friends.

We have our privacy here and the food is really delicious. Very soon the owner of the restaurant joins us with a dish he wants us to taste. Everything here is so fresh and tasty. When we asked to pay, he only got money for what we ordered telling us that the beers and the extra dish are a treat from the restaurant. This shows a man who cares for his customers.  I am glad I had the idea of coming here after all.
