The Church of St. John the Baptist's Birth
We sat in the car for seconds but we are out again. This time we are walking towards the Church of St. John.
It is an imposing building on a hill and the Bell Towers can be seen from a long distance.
On our way we come to a well and Katerina and Alexei drink some water
We come to the church after 7 or 8 minutes and to my surprise we don’t go in the huge beautiful church but we enter a door and get in an antechamber of a really ancient church. In this very old entrance room there are three tombstones and the walls are very thick with very small windows. The floor is stone paved and seems to be very old. We examine carefully the contents of this room, and Kate tries to read what is written on the signs and one of the tombs.
Minutes later we open another door and we are found in a long room. The ceiling and walls are full of drawings. Some women are cooking and there is a huge very old fireplace of cast iron, and firebricks, and on the opposite side a stove, and a washbasin. The women seem to be really busy, and I notice long benches in the centre with books, icons and souvenirs. This room is really landed with SO many things! It is possible that it seems like this because of the drawing on the ceiling and walls
We have to bend our heads to get inside this very ancient church of John the Baptist.
The photos I have taken testify what this church looks like.
Actually the churches are two, one next to the other.
I am impressed when I see Jesus on the cross and the many huge dark stones underneath – The Calvary! It is very near the connecting wall of the library.
The sun is shining brightly outside and some rays fill the room with light. Because of these windows though I cannot have the quality of photos I wish to have.
Some of the Russian words look like Greek and there are times that I can read the names of the Saints
We leave the Church, say good bye to the ladies and leave. We have a short walk towards the river bank take some photos, and then return to the car.
It is time to leave beautiful Ladoga.
