Our Visit to Skyros Archaeological Museum

I come to the Archaeological Museum which is just a few steps further from the Faltaits Museum.  No matter how many times I have visited a Greek Archaeological museum and seen very similar pots and exhibits, I believe that I will always find something new, learn something else each time.

The systematic excavation that has been performed by the Greek Archaeological Service on the site of Palamari on the northeast coast of Skyros, over the past 20 years, has brought to light one of the most significant prehistoric Aegean settlements during the early and middle Bronze Age, namely during the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC.

Besides the pottery, other artifacts that come from the excavations of the houses and the fortification, bear witness to the standard of living and occupation of the inhabitants.

Mr. Ftoulis Dimitri, the person who works at the museum and who loves the Skyrian tradition, showed me a photo of himself in his traditional wedding costume.  He told us that he and his wife wanted very much this traditional wedding where the whole village was invited all in traditional clothes.

It is so encouraging seeing people loving the tradition of their birth place.

In Skyros I found many people like Dimitri who love and follow their tradition.

As we were talking with Dimitri in the garden about the customs and traditions of Skyros a man in a paraglide was passing over our heads and he was calling Dimitri to see him flying.

We got out and saw him flying above us, and in minutes he landed down next to the sundy beach of Molos.

We leave the museum and head down to Pegasus, the hotel where we are staying.

It is time to enjoy some swimming….The beautiful coast of Acherounes is waiting for us.  What a lovely beach to exercise!

I swim for 2 hours and then have an afternoon nap.

It has been a great day!

We leave for the capital and have dinner at a nice restaurant.

Tomorrow morning we are sailing back home.

In all it has been a great three day trip, and we enjoyed every minute we spent both at Pegasus hotel and also on the island.  I look forward to coming back in spring sometime.

Some ancient potteries shown in post are very similar to those of ancient China's. It's amazing how different cultures breed almost identical stuff!

I guess I agree very much with Weng Bin here, it is very similar. Well, its amazing to see how cross cultural activities took place even in ancient times. You are lucky being allowed to take photographs in the museum for us to see. In this part of the world, i.e. Asia, most museums do not allow photography inside. I guess they want people to visit the places personally. And the beach is amazing. I could spend half a day just taking photographs there.
