The afternoon of the same day we go out for some photos to the upper city of Kymi. The road from the port upwards has 52 bends and once a year a popular Car Racing is held out here.

Now, I guess I have to give you some info about the place I am visiting today.

During the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th it was the time of new prosperity for this place here, with its financial, social and cultural progress brought about by the seafaring trade with the trading centres of the Black Sea and France.

Ship owners from the area called Cumean, carried the local products, especially its famous red wine to those ports, especially Marseilles, where it was used by the French to colour their own wines.

Wealth is brought back to Kimi,  new enlightened ideas are carried over through the contact with western culture, and an urban way of thinking is developed.

This can be clearly seen in the buildings, the local costume with its Renaissance influence, the cottage-industry, and the lifestyle of the people here.

Ok…..enough about Kimi and the past.

I am in the present, so here is what I am doing today……actually this afternoon!

We are up at the central square of the village and stop opposite the church of St. Athanasios.  There are many young people sitting at the different café bars in the area enjoying their coffee or afternoon snack.

Usually you see them sitting and enjoying their ( frappe) coffee. It is a cold coffee well shaked sometimes with a couple of ice cubes in, and served in long glasses with a straw. (shaked cold Nes).

There is one very old building that attracts my attention that connects the 2nd floor with the upper square where I am standing.

Choneftiko is the next place we come to.

A place with springs, famous throughout Evia for its mineral water.

The word –choneftiko means peptic or digestive, so it must have got its name from the quality of the water which is believed to have healing powers.

There used to be a factory bottling this mineral water here, however it is closed for many years now. In the past there was always running water but I cannot hear water today. A man tells me that they keep the springs off and anyone wishing to get water, has to turn them on. I am disappointed as the place was full of life back then. It used to be more beautiful  - probably because of the running water…. nothing reminds me of those years.

On our way out here today we met several locals either on their own, with children on bikes or with friends walking, and several others jogging.  The spot is surrounded by high trees so it attracts people who want to take their afternoon walk or exercise.  It seems that many people are exercising lately……it is not only me I thought!

There is a very tiny little church in the square, and it is dedicated to Virgin Mary. The main icon symbolizes Virgin Mary as the protectress of the round area. (see the photo).

It is already getting late and I am anxious to have some sea food.

I want to have some ouzo with a variety of sea food, but the normal portion costs 30 euros, - a portion for three or four persons.

I ask for the smaller one but it costs 20 euros – portion for two the man said, but Yianni has no intention of having sea food as he says they are not good for his health. So I ask for the smallest one, just for me.

Surprised I hear the boy telling me that he cannot serve me a smaller portion.

I asked to speak to the owner, the man I spoke to in the morning but he was absent.

Seeing that I have no alternative I have to order something else…….everything seems so expensive!  I start getting angry seeing that in this restaurant there is  just one or two other couples eating, while the one next door is already crowded even though it is still early.

I thought I had picked an expensive restaurant and probably this is the reason why locals prefer the other one.

I get even more angry now and decide to order something quickly and leave. I order kalamari (squid)….

The squid is awful….it is so hard to chew that I leave it in the plate.

My dinner is a disaster tonight!!!
