Got a Greyhound bus from San Francisco on Friday night. Its between 550 and 600 miles, and you go via L.A. But as the bus did not leave until 22.00. Had to change at LA at about 05.30, and arrived in San Diego at 08.30.

The hotel was only 5 minutes walk from the greyhound station, and was recommended in my Lonely Planet guide of the Californain coast, and is a real find. It is a beautiful old building, that used to be the YMCA, but has now been converted into a Hotel. I am amazed at the standard of it, as it is only $50 dollars a night - bargain.

Managed to get a few hours sleep on the coach, and was able to get an early check in. So was out and about exploring by 11.00. The weather was certainly a big improvement from S.F !!! It was nice and warm and sunny. Am staying about a 5 minute walk from the waterfront. Its a saturday morning and there seems to be quite a few people about, mostly locals. Have a good walk round, and go on a bus tour and a boat trip so to get a good look at the place, as I only plan to be here 2 days.

Then I walked into the gaslamp area which is where there are lots of bars and shops. End up having a Sub and 3 pints of local steam ale for luch ( Can understand why they call it steam !! )
Went to a bar called Nicky Dinnions in the evening. Was nice enough to sit outside, great people watching. Sam Diego has a nice feel to it, very friendly and spotlessly clean. Still seems plenty of down and outs about. That has surprised me to that extent, one of the richest countries etc

Sunday and its raining again. I decided to make the most of the excellent facilities at the Hotel, and get all my stuff laundered before I leave. Crashed the local hostel to use its internet facilities and have now sorted my accommodation for Fiji and New Zealand, based on recommendations from people I have met that have stayed in these places. There are a lot of people on the same Round the world ticket as me, many that are going in the opposite direction though, so USA is their last stop.

Was back at Nicky Dinnions for 17.00 as that was when their Oscars party was starting. Back on the local Steal ale at $3 a pint, lovely. Had a good basket meal there, and tripped back to the Hotel at about 22.00.

Am getting the Amtrak to L.A in the morning as most of the way it runs alongside the coast and the Pacifis Highway, some nice views supposedly.......................... Maybe I will leave the rain behind this time..............
