Decided to give a Hostel a go. Did book a private room though ( there are kimits to economising !! ) Was pleasantly surprised. They were very ckean, although basic, but friendly with good facilities, kitchen, laundry internet etc. Prices very reasonable too.
The first night I stayed in one in Fort Mason, which is Fishermans Whary, down on the waterfront. Was fairly quiet there, as the weather has been so bad most people seemed to have moved into town, as more to do when the weather is so bad. So had a nice pizza, and a few beers, and the next day got a cable car into Union Square ( downtown ) and moved to the Hostel there.
The location is great. Maceys round the corner, the store is massive, but dont know what I was expecting, just another big Dept. store. Not much fun shopping anyway, when you are limited to what you can buy, as it has to be carried !!!  And have bought a few bits already.
Friday I had a walk round chinatown, which I would imagine is what it is like to be in some on these asian countries, Apart from the street signs, it was hard to know you are in the USA.
Got friendly with a nice couple called James and Catherine, from Watford. They are comeing to the end of their round the world trip, USA is their last stop. So they have recommended accommodation in Auckland, which I have now booked and also told me lots of good stuff about Oz !!!  Was able to trade that by showing them my photos of Vegas, and give them a few hints and tips, as they are off there next !!!
Had a great Chinese Meal just off Union Square for $8, amazing !!!  Then ended up in an Irish Bar ( of all places ) called Johnny Foleys which is just round the corner from the hostel.

Now off to get a Greyhound coach to San Diego, it is over 500 miles south along the californian coast, so hopefully the weather should be a bit better there ( near mexican border ) Am travelling over night, and am booked into a hotel for 2 nights. Here's hoping I leave the rain behind...................
