Where I stayed
Steve and Linda's
I cross Texas across the pan handle. There sure is a lot of open country. The terrain isn't quite as uniformly flat as the parts of Oklahoma through which I passed but there's little of interest to see from the freeway.
When I cross into New Mexico I move into the mountain time zone and I start seeing thunderstorms across the desert and the GPS warns of flash flood danger in the area. The first one is well to the south of me and I don't bother putting on rain gear. The next one is north of me... still no rain gear. Then they start appearing more frequently. There's one right ahead of me but the GPS shows the freeway makes a dogleg at Santa Rosa so I may miss it... nope. I get rained on but it's brief and not too heavy.
Now there's a checkerboard of thunderstorms. There's no way I'm going to stay out of them so I get off the freeway and under a gas station roof to prepare for the rain. A rental moving truck pulls up to get gas next to me and I meet Bob and Kathy who are moving from California to Texas. Bob opens the back of the truck to show me his BMW motorcycle which he uses for traffic escort (funerals and the like). I also meet a Gold Wing rider who pulls up. He's had his Wing for 3 weeks and already has 7,000 miles on it. He comments that he just can't stay off it.
I continue, now prepared for rain, and enjoy the changing scenery as mesas and bluffs appear. I do get rained on but the showers are brief and don't cause major problems. I arrive at Steve and Linda's and we go out to dinner at a wonderful local restaurant that serves Southwestern food. At home it's homemade apple pie for desert. I am suffering so...
