The North Side
Entry 18 of 23 | show all | print this entry |
Aaron and I both woke up at an early 6am to catch our 7:30 dive boat. We assembled our gear as the sun was rising over the island. Luckily, the sea was very tranquil so we were able to head to the pristine north side for our dives. The first dive site was Blackish Point - an 18 meter wall reef drift dive with several swim in caves. We reached our dive site after a 40 minute pretty boat ride. Aaron easily dropped down in the water to proper depth, but my ears gave me trouble. I took my time and went slowly, making sure to equalize often and eventually made it down to the 60 foot level. The coral was neat and we saw several unique midnight parrot fish - they're very large! The current pulled us along the reef at a comfortable pace. I must mention though the water was quite murky and I found the diving in Thailand to be far superior. We all made a 3 minute safety stop at 5 meters before resurfacing. I opted out of the 2nd dive and actually got to see 3 large sea turtles on the surface while the others were diving. Very cool! Afternoon found us both exhausted so we napped the rest of the day away until hunger pains awoke us. We finally found a restaurant I'd been wanting to try, the Ultralight Cafe, which specializes in israeli and island cuisine. Unfortunately it was closed, so we ventured to a nearby dive-shop restaurant, the India Wok. The food was really good and reminded us of home! I had a red Thai curry and Aaron tried a spicey peanut chicken satay. Both came with jasmine rice and steamed bell peppers. You'd think there would be a lot of fresh veggies and fruits on an island in the tropics, but all Utila (and Roatan) seem to have are tomatoes, iceburg lettuce, bellpeppers, onions, and bananas. To tell you the truth, we're dreaming of Safeway's produce department at home!
