Scuba diver´s paradise
Entry 13 of 23 | show all | print this entry |
We got up at 5:20 this morning to catch our 6am cab to the Galaxy Wave Ferry. Elijah, our friend from Colorado, was supposed to meet us to share the ride, but didn´t show. It would have been nice to split the $15 fare again, but oh well, it´s more his loss than ours. Before this ocean crossing I took a Dramamine and managed to keep my lunch this time around. Yay! Once in La Ceiba, we grabbed our packs from the mess that was the checked bag luggage area and walked the 50 feet or so over to the Utila ferry terminal. The Utila Princess is teensy tiny compared to Roatan´s Galaxy Wave. It´s more like a barge. Though mostly uneventful, my pill started to wear off towards the end of the voyage and I was very glad to put my feet on the dock. Utila is a very different atmosphere than Roatan. It seems bigger, but that´s probably because everyone - locals and tourists are here in this one little town on the southeast part of the island. Most of the rest is subject to flooding or part of a marine/wetlands park for iguanas. The few streets are slightly hilly, twisty, and full of pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, ATVs and a few cars. You´ve definitely got to watch where you walk though; people are on the bottom of the road totem pole! Aaron started his PADI open water certification course this afternoon while I was able to work on updating this blog. He´s in a class with 4 other students, an instructor, and 3 dive masters in training. Looks like he´ll be pretty safe in the sea! For dinner we walked along the main street until deciding to try a "restaurant" having it´s grand opening - Taco Will´s. The dining area consisted of a few plastic table and chairs set in a dirt lot with a gas/grill and prep area on a makeshift counter. Fan-cy. Aaron was more impressed with our giant chicken tacos than I was. I was mostly wondering about the refridgeration aspect and if we´ll still be alive tomorrow.
