Buenos dias Antigua, Guatemala!
Entry 5 of 23 | show all | print this entry |
It was such a long travel day. Our flight left SFO at ~1:30am and took about 6 hours to get to a beautiful, green El Salvador. We only had time to use the restroom before we hopped onto our connecting flight to Guatemala City. 50 minutes later we touched down in a city filled with corrugated tin roofs. Luckily our bags made it too and both immigration and customs were a breeze. Our driver, Manuel from San Antonio Aguas Calientes, who was taking us to our Antigua Hotel, Meson Panza Verde, found us easily and was the most professional looking driver at the airport. A quick gaunt through Guatemala City, avoiding colorful chicken buses and other smoggy vehicles, got us onto the twisty, hilly road to Antigua. After about 45 minutes, the cobblestone streets announced our arrival in this city surrounded by 3 volcanoes (non of which we've seen due to heavy cloud cover!) We checked our bags, tipped Manuel, and proceeded to find coffee and food while our room was prepared. Some wandering around and a lunch of pan and tortillas with chile rellenos and Gallo beer, filled the 4 hours we had to wait. A nice afternoon of enjoying the local beverages and exploring the rooftop terrace of our hotel kept us busy until around 7 pm. Aaron ended up snoring on the couch while I wrote about first day in Central America. Bienvenidos a Guatemala!

Glad to hear you arrived safely, and with your luggage. We, and your puppies are fine. Don't worry about them. We are all getting along just fine! Have fun and enjoy your trip. Love, Mom.
