To the UK
Left a balmy 35 degrees to arrive in a balmy 7. Manchester airport has the important advantage of not having to go through London. It has no other advantages. Think Tamworth on steroids but badly designed and you have it. It's a regional airport trying to grow up with bad design and no infra structure money but it’s good never the less.
Car was there when we arrived which meant we missed the traditional hire car ceremony of "We don’t have your exact car but can upgrade you to something smaller than you booked and it will be here this afternoon"
We pack the car, fire up the GSPS, whose name in now Mif who quickly makes friends with foreign satellites and announces that getting to Burwood is difficult from where we are and we blunder our way to north Wales via an M road.
Roads are excellent and time is good. Weather changes from rain to blazing sun every 5 minutes. A salt and carb fix along the way and we arrive in LLandillo, a beach resort of former and current grandeur. Miles of pebbly and dirty sand sea front with promenade and a million huge, old hotels. Lovely architecture.
Huge hill behind town with cable cars and gondola. We drive to top to see view, ancient copper mines, sub arctic winds and mini golf. Down hill to ancient town cemetery, skinny winding roads and more wind. Back to town for pier (excellent condition).
Ignoring B’s plea for more food we shop
Approach to Conwy is amazing – castle on the river, boats, 3 bridges, city walls – more of this later.
Kill 2 locals to secure only parking space this side of the Pennines (it is Mothering Sunday and mothers are being led through a maze of shops, tea rooms and screaming children on the promise that they are having a good time) and ring Anthony to get into house. Minor problem is that he already has people in it. He arrives (lovely man), claims it is all his fault (it’s not really, just one of those silly mix ups with dates, but we agree he is to blame to keep him happy) and return to LLandillo to look for accommodation. He sends us to Chapel Street where all the B and Bs go to breed and we settle in. It is now 3.30 pm and we have been awake or travelling for 36 hours and G has had a cramped left hand for most of the day which has added to the general air of fiesta.
Nice B and B, unpack and organize, dinner (3 fish and chips and a steak and kidney pie – all good), quick promenade and off to an early (local time) bed
It is now 5 the following morning and there is no wireless – sorry, may be a while before you get this.
