Yesterday was the second-last lesson in our course of Turkish classes, and next week four of our small band of nine will have left... for Turkey, for South Africa, for Egypt or just to run a school play! So we celebrated the end of our wonderful course with a spectacular Turkish feast at Kervan restaurant on the Parramatta Road.
We were lucky to have several Turkish speakers along - Sevim, of course, as well as Graham's work colleage Ali who has been wonderfully kind and helpful while we've been struggling with the intricacies of vowel harmony, and several husbands and friends. And yes, it's true what they say about the Turks - they are kind, patient and helpful, and touchingly pleased that we're learning their language. Of course, as soon as they started talking freely, we couldn't understand a thing, but there were several veeeeerrrrrry sloooowwww and clear conversations (for our benefit) that we could follow, hurrah
The food was great... but if Turkey's anything like this, we'll be the size of houses when we come home! About five courses, starting with meze, about six different ones, so of course you have to have a piece of pide with every one of the six, just to try... then battered and fried veggies, then four different kinds of pide, then wonderful kebab meat on a bed of pide with yoghurt and a tomatoey sauce, then shish kebab, three different kinds of meat.... finally tea and sweets! Groan!
Geçen carşamba akşamı biz Kervan lokantasına gittik. Pideler, kepap, mezeler, salatalar, kızartmalar yedik. Su, ayran, şarap, çay içtik. Çok sohbet ettik. Çok güzel vakit geçirdik. Yine görüşmek üzere!

! Even the waiter stood patiently, patiently waiting for me to slowly put together a halting request that he take our photo - he knew perfectly well what I wanted, because I was waving a camera at him, but he still let me have my little bit of practise. The food was great... but if Turkey's anything like this, we'll be the size of houses when we come home!
