The first good laugh was when the bus approached a narrow one lane bridge and got stuck in the mud and then the driver got off to guide while a passenger drove the bus over the bridge. It was hilarious and a narrow crossing. On we bumped along until we got a flat tire. Very flat and the driver couldn't get the lug nuts off. We waited only about an hour for the new bus which arrived out of nowhere in it's modern school bus yellow. This one was from at least the 70's. There were many narrow passages but we made it safe and sound. It was about the best time we've had in Central America so far. The area we were stuck in was beautiful and home to Mennonites who fled the US during the Korean War to escape forced draft into the war.
We arrived in Monte Verde and found a nice guest house to stay at. We signed up for a guided tour of Santa Elena Reserve and saw few wildlife but the greenery was beautiful. We hiked through the cloud forest and rain forest. We also visited a very cool frog pond at night to view many frogs which was really very, very cool. Thought much about you Kevin S. and how much you would have loved it. The rain prevented us from venturing out to do a zip line tour so we may do one in Nicaragua.
Costa Rican's are very nice people and extremely helpful. Very passionate about what they do as evidenced on our frog and lava tours. We got back into the world of crazy big money again. The colones is 550 to $1. I hate the large denominations because it makes you feel like everything is so expensive. Until you break it down and realize something is only is only $5. The popular dish is the casada which is a small salad, rice, beans and fish. Very fillling and yummy. Off to Nicaragua now......stay tuned.
