June 1989 - July 1990

After 10 oh-so-wonderful weeks in the thick, lush, green forests of Fort Leonard Wood, MI ... it was time to move on.  By the time I was finished with Army Basic Training, I was more than ready to be California bound!  One of the reasons why I joined the Army was to learn foreign languages.  I was always pretty good at them in High School, so I thought this would be the best thing to jump into for my career field.  The U.S. Army's Language School just happened to be in beautiful Monterey, CA.  What could be better?  I was two and a half hours south of San Francisco/Oakland ... Pebble Beach was only miles down the road ... the city of Carmel (Where Clint Eastwood was the Mayor) was nearby as well.  This was definitely a treat after doing multitudes of push-ups for the Drill Sergeants during Basic Training.  And for my first language ... POLISH!  Why, you ask?  Well, because the Army said so, but mainly because "The Wall" was still up, the Cold War was still at it's peak ... and there was a need for soldiers to learn eastern European languages.  I had some Russian before, so this prepped me a little bit, but let me assure you all that this language damn near kicked my butt from here to China and back!  For me, it was tough ... and the course lasted 63 weeks, so you can well imagine how mind-numbing it got after a while!

Nonetheless, the reward was well worth it ... and for my first time ever living in California ... the beaches could not have been more beautiful, more lovely ... and well, they could have been a bit warmer, but southern Cali was not on the menu for this trip out west.  That would come at a later time.  And after graduating from the Polish Basic Course, I was on my way to the desert ... that being Arizona!
