(C) I really can't bring myself to write anything about this place.  It is the most profoundly evil place I have ever been and I just can't believe people actually built it knowing what it was used for.  I was surprised that Auschwitz seemed so benign compared to Birkenau, which seems to have been built for only one purpose, the extinguishing of people's lives.  I am really glad we came here, but I never want to come back.

(S) What I was struck with immediately was the peacefulness and almost beauty of Auschwitz. It had been a police training facility before the war and consisted of red brick buildings and tree-lined streets. It was hard to believe the horror that took place here. Birkenau was different. Barracks as far as the eye could see and then the huge gas chambers at the end...  Death permeates the air, even in the sunshine.
