(C) Halfway through our trip in Berlin, it donned on me that I was confusing the nazis with the Russians.  These two periods of history are so distinct yet blurred as you wander through this town.  Hitler and his merry band of Munchners so profoundly impacted this city, but it wasn't until the Russians came that they built the Wall and everything that came with it.  It really is amazing that Berliners still live here at all after everything they've been through.  We stayed in a great campground here on the road towards Potsdam and enjoyed some great german food, beer and friendly people at a local place along the road.  Germany is SO EASY to eat in.

After a beautiful day of walking ALL OVER Berlin, up and down the Unter den Linden, over the river and back again, we went back to our sweet campground for a picnic.  It was cloudy, but not raining.  Then, in the middle of the night, the thunderstorm struck and lasted for almost two hours.  I have never been through anything like it and the rain came down HARD.  Thankfully our very fine Quechua tent was super waterproof, above and below.  I didn't get worried until I felt the water coming underneath the tent.  For over an hour, we had at least an inch of water flowing underneath us.  It's a pretty vulnerable feeling in a tent.

The next day as we were leaving, it was sunny and cool, and we left just in time before a very large transgender group from Belgium moved in and set up their "camp."  What a shitshow.

(S) Did he mention it was raining? I mean RAINING! I have heard and seen downpours, hail, thunder, and lightning, but this one takes the German Kuchen. I was convinced we were in the middle of some sort of Berlin air raid. I was terrified. I am going to go out on a limb and say it was probably amplified in our 1 1/2 person tent, but it was LOUD. It did feel like we were sleeping on a water bed, which was pretty sketchy.

But, as Chad said, Berlin is an amazing city. There was just so much to see. The remnants of the Wall are disturbing, as are the remains of the Nazi regime. However, the people have rebuilt the city into one of the most advanced and beautiful in Europe.
