(C) THOUGHT OF THE DAY - Wow, who knew?? This place is great!
Iraklion - Birthplace of El Greco (Dominikos Theotokopolous, according to the statue in the square) and nearby location of Knossos. We saw both today. Home of the Hotel Mirabello where we warmed up, dried out, and took showers. Proprietor is nice and lent us a book about Crete, which was helpful. We rented a car last night from the ever-helpful Europcar (TRAVELTIP - always use Kemwel and Europcar. They are saviors). Lunch today is on the main square - gyro platter of course, with 2 Greek salads (xoriatiki). And El Greco is one of my favorite painters, a lasting impression from the Prado, and I don't understand why he left Crete. Funny to see his statue here.
Knossos is amazing - otherworldly because nobody can really piece together any of it. Seems like the Mayan ruins in Yucatan - older than the Egyptians and without any story to explain it all. Some of the reconstructions and fake frescoes are really more distracting than helpful. More thumbnails ...
