St. Francis and the Dying City

(C) We went to Assisi for a day and camped for the first time at a great campground on the side of the mountain. There's lots of good camping in Assisi - I think for the pilgrims. After checking in and getting the "you want to camp??? now?" we picked out our site close enough to the bathrooms to make the midnight trip in the dark - far enough away to avoid weird bathroom noises, and overlooking a valley with a panorama view. We had dinner in a really classy place, with steak, pasta and the local wine Sagrantino. Sara got the glare from the evil Italian ladies behind us who apparently thought we should be wearing something other than our bluejeans and ropers.
Assisi was really one of the best places we have visited. We happened upon Sunday mass and sat through it. It was really great - even in Italian. Then we wandered through the church and saw the tomb of San Francesco. Wandered through the town, bought a sweet birthday present for Tomassi having to do with St. Francis, and then drove across the valley to Civita.
Civita is VERY HIGH on the Rick Steves backdoor list. We had to go. There were signs in Bagnoregio pointing the way to the "dying city." Something like 3 people still live there and they are getting old. There's only one way in and no running water. Beautiful spot - not so much fun if you needed to buy groceries! More thumbnails ...
