Wow. Rome. The word evokes emotions long before you even think about stepping into its chaotic, historical wonders. So funny that we were here a couple weeks ago for dinner. That was a late night foray into the city center, on a Sunday, when there was no traffic. We had chance to wander the wonders without crowds - not that there seem to be crowds now either. Anyway, seems so weird to be here again in just a couple of weeks to actually see the sights and play tourist.
We are staying at the Giulio Cesare - which the hotel brochure assures us is the favorite locale of various historical lights as Janis Joplin and Stevie Wonder - who I doubt appreciated the fine views out our bedroom window onto the alley.
But Rome is truly a wonderful place. So much going on all the time. We are just a few blocks from the Vatican. A block from the river. A few blocks from the Palazzo della Giustizia and the big bridge that runs across the Tevere to the Navona. This is all well and good. The nightlife around the Piazza Cavour is fun, and the rest of the city is so close. We caught the Eurostar here from Florence and it only took 1 1/2 hours. So quick compared to driving but you follow the highway all the way. We went right past the autostrada exit for Orvieto which beckoned so strongly when we passed it a couple of weeks ago by car. We will have to go back there.
Too much excitement for the day to do much tonight. We went to dinner just off via Condotti and had a delicious roman feast. Then we wandered back through town to our hotel. More thumbnails ...

Thanks for putting up stories and pictures - it's proof that you didn't actually fall off the planet. I'll keep checking the travel pod, so I can't wait for your next posting. Have fun! -CP
