The Arab market was eerily quiet as I made my way up the steps through the old city. I even wondered if I was going the wrong way. Suddenly a kid of about 14 was running towards me. A game of tag perhaps? As he bolted past me a soldier followed and I knew it was something more serious. Then a guy in his twenties approached and a policewoman followed suit. They were tackled by police further down the steps.
I heard a teenager telling some tourists that the market was closed and I asked him why. 'Because of what happened in Gaza. You hear? Everyone Dead!' I wanted to ask more questions but I have been here long enough now to recognise the latent fury. I carried on towards the Jaffa gate.
In town I saw police vans, ambulances, and soldiers heading towards the old city. Things here weren't going to be the same.
