So... As I sit in the shade of multiple palm trees, drinking a questionable iced coffee, I thought I'd better update you all on my life in Sri Lanka - especially as I have a bit of news to report this week!

So.. On Wednesday just gone, we all donned our beautiful saris for our 'goodbye' ceremony at the mayor of Kotte's house - who cooked us a beautiful meal which we were served by some hunky employees of his (but that's not the news, although it was a welcome event!)
Anyway, David (the part owner of SL volunteers) was asking me how my time in SL had been and when I casually said I wish I could stay he told me that, well, he and the project managers wanted me to! He asked me to become a volunteer coordinator and stay to manage the next cohort of volunteers who fly out on sept 23rd.
At first I wasn't too sure, especially since I had promised Dave and Bryan I'd be back for work and also my bank account is currently reading -1300....but when David added that he wanted to make me manager of te psychology placement alongside my friend Ellen (who is originally planned to come with but who'd been housed in a different town) well - what an opportunity!

Although I truly felt ready to go home on Wednesday, and I have missed my family and friends and some home comforts - what would I do with a few months back home? In comparison to what I can achieve here, I think the answer is - not a great lot!
I've applied myself in projects, of course interrupted sometimes by low motivation and struggles concerning the culture and conditions, but still feel like I have a lot more to give!
Maybe it's just because I'm bossy to the core, but I really think under my leadership a great team can be created who will achieve a lot! Ill be more heavily involved behind the scenes at NIMH and HWH, especially with regards to liasing with doctors and professionals, which is exciting as I think ill gain so much more understanding and experience - and who knows maybe even share some ideas with them too!
I really hope to pass on my 'insight' to the new volunteers too.. Although I've only been here 6 weeks, I feel I've become competent working on the wards and could advise them on what activities to do with which patient and school groups. I'm rambling I know. Anyway - it should be good!
An I suppose it will make coming home all the more wonderful :)

So anyway - back to where I am now!
I am still allowed my week off (I'd planned to travel my final week with Hannah - the only other volunteer staying for an extra week after projects).. And so here I am in Uppaveli near trincomalee! It is stunning! Lengthy, sandy beaches with small fishing boats dotted around and little guesthouses amongst plan trees.
Aqua inn, where were staying, has a swimming pool! I cannot explain how luxurious such a thing is for Sri Lanka haha.. There is still the aptly nicknamed 'bum-gun' in the toilet, and bare rooms with a dodgy ceiling fan, but outdoors is utter paradise!
We've been sunbathing since we arrived on Saturday - after a horrendous 8hour overnight bus from Colombo.. So I'm looking pretty black ;) waheeeeyyyy - hope it lasts! Tomorrow were going snorkelling off pigeon island - lots of tropical fish AND reef sharks - scary but exciting!!
After that we will be getting another overnight bus back to Colombo - this time we've booked a luxury bus with ac and assigned seats! So less stress where travelling is concerned!
From there were spending two days at Unawatuna and then I'm going on to meet George, Jess and some other coordinators in mirissa for the weekend before the hard work begins again on Monday!
One good thing is that George is still here too - bless him, he's one of my best friends here and is truly like a brother to me (much to mums upset, as she wonders why I never go for the 'nice boys' haha). So yeah, I feel better that ill have him here with me for the next 6 weeks!

That's all I have to report now really!

Dad - I'm sure you're reading this! I know we will speak on the phone tomorrow but just wanted to say I'm so excited for you going on your trip tomorrow! So proud to have such an interesting and adventurous dad :) everyone here thinks you sound amazing - and you are!! Also thanks mum for transferring some extra funds ;) I've already told Dave ill do any shift he wants me to when I'm back in order to repay you!

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments and encouraging emails - it's great to hear from you all!

So onto the next stage of my adventure I guess!

Take care

Lots of love xx
