It was stinking hot, no breeze because the town is all cramped and crowded and back from the beach (which itself is not that nice and full of people trying to sell you everything and anything that you don’t need or want. Giant wooden sculpture of a rhinocerous? No thanks. Jade encrusted carving of a Hindu love god with a giant phallus? Hmmmm, tempting but...... No.) Moreover, the town is full of Australians of the worst kind.... you know the ones, we don’t need to elaborate. A bit lack Blackpool for Australia
Fortunately, it was very easy to escape to the island of Lembongan just a short boat trip away where things were much nicer and more chilled out. We found what has to be one of our best bargain stays in the Shipwreck hotel where for the equivalent of about £10 we got a massive en-suite double room with air-con in a hotel right on the beach with a little pool looking out over the sea and sunsets. Nice.
We spent a couple of days snorkelling, swimming, lounging and pottering around the island on mopeds to magnificent scenery and beautiful but bizarrely empty beaches and once, bizarrely, stumbled into a cock fighting tournament from which we made a hasty exit. All too soon it was time to head back to the mainland to catch our surprisingly short flight to Perth.
We have really enjoyed our first proper experience of S.E Asia: the hustle and bustle of the cities, the magnificent cheap beer and food of Vietnam, the stunning beaches and islands of Thailand, the amazing scenery above and below water of Borneo and the fact that, for the first time, we have been on something of a backpacker trail for an extended period of time where we have met nice people and travelled with them a bit or bumped into them again later.
However, we were really looking forward getting to Australia again and experiencing some of the things we have begun to miss: good, clean, sit-down toilets, wine, cheese, proper milk, food that doesn’t involve fried rice...... bring it on.
