Continuing our visits to UNSECO sites, we took a bus to one of the first capitals in the Thai empire "Sukhothai." The emerging Thai nation flourished militarily, claiming lands as far north as Vientiane (capital of Laos now), and culturally developing a Thai alphabet as well as distinctive architecture and art. All of this was done in 150 years before the capital was moved to Ayuthaya (which we already saw).
The remains of the 21 historical sites can be seen from within the old walls. We rented 2 bikes and drove around the park all day and stopped for lunch. After lunch we went to the Ramkhamheng National Museum which provided us with an understanding of the history and culture of the city and people.
It was very hot during the late afternoon, so each day we would come back to our hotel and hit the pool for a swim and a nap!
