A one hour car ride south to the pier at the town of Ban Phe and a 45 minute boat ride landed us on the island of Ko Samet. This place is close enough to be a quick escape for locals from Bangkok, to be able to hit the beach for the weekend.  The island has been a National Park since 1981, which means that, if you are not Thai their is a 400bt ($3.50) charge to stay as long as you like. The beaches are the reason you come here white sand, clear blue water and palm trees right up to the shoreline.
On Saturday we took a boat trip around the island from about 10:30 am to 5:00 pm.  It included 2 stops for snorkeling, lunch, and fishing.  I caught 3 small fish and Darcy 2, the crew cooked all the fish and we eat them.  They clean them up and set-up a wok for a quick fry, not much meat to them but it tasted good.
At sunset all the restaurants set-up their tables on the beach for candle-lit dining.  We happened to be here for "The Full Moon Festival" which they celebrate with fireworks, the making a floating flowers with a candle in them (to be sent out to sea) and the sending up of hot air (from a flame) kite-like objects (in Thai a "comloy") into the sky. That can be seen for about a mile or so. This is all done to ask the sea for a good year and good luck to each family.
We purchase one of the "comloy" in which you write you thoughts on the it, light a paper circle on the bottom of it which burns and fills up the paper box kite with hot air so that it will float away. The sky was filled with 20 to 30 of them at a time and fireworks in the background, it looked fantastic.
