Our next stop was Amelia Island. This Island was visited by the French, the Spanish developed it, the English named it , the Americas tamed.

We stayed in a great Florida State Park on the Atlantic Ocean. One of the main tourist attractions is the 50 block area of downtown Fernandina which reflects Victorian architecture.

The other is Fort Clinch, which we were in luck and on the first of each month the do a reenactment. In 1842 the US Government purchased a tract of land on the northern end of the island, at the Florida-Georgia border. A military installation was to be built on the property, to guard the mouth of the St. Mary's River, protect coastal and interior shipping, and defend the deepwater port of the city.

Cinda Chambers on

Jan 2's sister. Boy you two do get around. I cannot believe how quickly you are consuming your travel down the east coast. South Carolina was a favorite of my late husbands. It is fun to see the pics. I have never been there. Florida briefly but have the east, mostly northern, on my bucket list. Perhaps Jan and I will one day visit WA. D. C. That would be great. Happy and safe travels. I will pass this on to her. I guess she isn't on your list of recepients any longer. Perhaps you could add her she so enjoys traveling vicariously through your adventures as I do. Happy New Year and happy trails. Cinda
