Its philosophy and practice emphasize the necessity of self-effort to move the soul towards divine consciousness and liberation. Jainism has prehistoric origins dating before 3000 BC. The renowned temple at Ranakpur age is controversial but it is largely considered to be anywhere between the late 14th to mid-15th centuries. Over 1444 marble pillars, carved in exquisite detail, support the temple which is about 200x200 feet (60x62 meters) in area. The pillars are all differently carved and no two pillars are the same. It is also said that it is impossible to count the pillars.
