Sunday 3rd Oct.

Back to Port Morseby and then onto Cairns today.

We had a bad day today, it all started at 04:10 in the morning , we had just got out of bed and were getting ready to be on the bus by 04:30 when there was a knock at the door, when i opened it it was one of the security people, and he said that everyone was on the bus already and they were waiting for us, we were last. So in record time we were ready and out the door, and at the bus by 04:20. Well you can imagine our surprise when we got there and saw that the bus was empty, just the security guard and the driver, we got on the bus and off we set for the airport, still half asleep and quite annoyed at the security guard who offered no explanation for his comments about everyone being on the bus already.

At the airport there were hoards of people checking in already and i think this is the most varied selection of items being checked in we have ever seen. There were bags of Mangos, Huge bunches of Bananas, Melons , chickens, and lots of other stuff in big wooden boxes. As they were being weighed by the checkin people the passengers were holding onto one end of these boxes to the real weight didn't register. This was all so amusing but we were to find out to our cost that the joke was going to be on us. In the departure lounge there was a Parrot sitting on one of the seats pooing all down the back of the chair, not certain if he was getting onto the flight or not.

The flight was completely full, one woman who didn’t have a seat went into the cockpit and sat with the pilots, and the whole plane stank of over ripe mangos.

When we got to Port Morsbey after a short stop at Medang, we stood by the baggage carousel and waited, and waited, round goes that melon again with no label on it, and again, and there is that huge bunch of Bananas that nobody seems to want to claim. Finally we realised that our one bag wasn’t going to come out, and we headed over to the baggage people to see if they knew what was happening. Well they didn’t, first they said that some bags had been offloaded an Medang, then they said that possibly they were off loaded at Wewak. After an hour or so of trying to find out what had happened to our bag we gave up and filled in a form. We went to the international terminal which is where our flight to Cairns was to leave from at 02:30. We went to the air Niugini customer services desk and finally found someone who seemed a bit more with it than the baggage people. She called a manager at wewak who confirmed that some bags had been offloded at wewak because the plane was overloaded, what a surprise, too many F***ing Bananas and Melons i guess. She got the manager to go back to the wewak airport and confirm that our bag was amongst the ones off loaded. A bit later they confirmed that it was, and that it would be on the next flight that got into port Morseby at 19:00, 6 hours and 30 mins after we leave for Cairns. The nice lady at the customer services desk promised that she would get the bag off the flight to port Morsbey and onto the next flight to Cairns that should arrive in Cairns at 11:00 the next day. At this stage I don’t think either of us were that confident we would see our bag again, so we got onto our flight to Cairns with just our backpacks.

After a good night’s sleep in Connie’s guest house we were sitting eating breakfast talking about what we needed to buy if we didn’t see our bag agan, when the phone rang and a person from Cairns airport confirmed that our bag was on the flight from Port Morsbey to Cairns that would be arriving at 11:00. We were so pleased. Off we set to the airport and sat waiting at the arrivals gate for a man to come out with our bag, and at about 11:30 he came through the door with our bag.
