Monday 27th

Transfer to Garoka in the eastern highlands today, up and out early with Brian the driver and the guide to Pym's guest house in Mount Hagen where we transferred to a 12 seater mini bus for the road trip to Garoka, the bus was brand new, so no sign of pigs muck on the seats. The scenery along the way was brilliant, first out through the Wagi valley where there are loads of crops growing, then up high again over 2,500 Meters ( magic mountain was over 3,000 meters), then it was a steep descent to garoka.

The Pacific Garden hotel was really nice, after the basic accommodation in magic mountain we were pleasantly surprised. The food was really good and reasonably cheap, Dinner and 2 wines and 2 beers came to less than 20.

Tuesday 28th

We had a bit of confusion today about our trip, but we got it all sorted in the end and we set off with a guide and the driver in the hotel bus. First stop was the Araso Mud men, quite similar to the Paiya mud men, but a slightly different story. This one was, while 2 tribes were fighting one of the people fell into the mud and when he stood up the other people were frightened and ran away, i think i prefer the Paiya mud men story. Anyway the mud men put on a show just for us and while we were watching the mud men half of the people in the village were watching us. The only scary bit was when one of the mud men pointed his bow and arrow at us and pretended to fire it at us.

After that we went onto a museum in Garoka, when we arrived all the lights were out so we tried all the switches but no luck. Then the curator came out and said that they had no electricity because they hadn’t paid the bill, and they were sending someone to pay it. Luckily Milo came prepared and had her head torch in her bag, so we could see the exhibits. Then onto our final visit of the day, the Raun Raun Theatre. Here there were loads of village people dressed in their traditional costumes dancing and singing, I got some great pictures.

In the evening we came back to the theatre for a play. We were told that it would start at 07:00 and we should get there by 06:30, so we did. Well the thing didn’t start until 08:00, it seems that they were waiting for the director to arrive before they started. The play was really good, and we managed to understand most of it, apart from a bit in the middle where men came in with masks on and pictures of animals on their sticks, still not sure what it was all about.
