Driving through west Cork
Entry 11 of 84 | show all | print this entry |
I woke up with a very sore throat this morning, so no gift of the gab for me from the blarney stone!! Went exploring Kinsdale this morning, very cute little harbour and lovely town, with colourfull houses and shopfronts. Took a quick drive up to Charles fort, very scenic area. The guide book says Kinsdale is an endlessly photographable harbour, and I tend to agree. Of course the sun at this time of year does not agree with photography, never really rising properly, and uncannily being head on in evey photo you want to take!! We took the scenic drive (with hedge) to a druid's ring of stones, not so impressive as those I have seen in England - I think because it is so touristy, that it doesn't have the same feel - it caould have also been the very loud Itialian family screaming at each other in the middle of the stones. . . . . Went for a drive down to the ring of Beara - very beautiful!! There are these fantastic little coves that come right up to the road, you can just imagine the fun the sailors would have with a sailboat here in summer. After traveling about half way down the peninsula we took a right turn to (name to be updated when I can remember it) gap. This is a road that leads straight through the mountain that runs down the middle of the peninsula. It was this fantasticly winding little road with really tight hair pin bends and steep inclines. Luckily for us it was only tourists on the road, because there was nowhere to stop and take photos, so we, like all the other cars, just stopped in the middle of the road. The road was only one lane wide, so you needed to be a bit careful of the cars going the other way! It was an absolutely fantastic drive that ended with us arriving in Kenmare, a town at the start of the ring of kerry. Once again, a little harder at this time of year, because a lot of the B&B's are shut. But we found one called Foleys that is conveniently located above a good pub and restraunt. Lucky!! I am looking forward to driving the ring of Kerry, I have heard so much about it!! We have booked in to Foleys for two nights, so we can linger and take as much time as we need.
