The other day the search machine took me to an entry by the most proliferate uncle_davros or whatever is his name. He packed his impressions of Skopje, mainly four-letter words and other crap. I was in Australia and can imagine the frustration people from DownUnder experience when globe-trotting. He never understood a thing about Skopje and I do not know why the heck he spends money on travel.
Skopje was, Skopje is and Skopje will always be a pleasant place to visit and an exciting community to live with. Although This entry will open up a view on Europe of 40 or so years ago, it is all like yesterday to me. The welcoming photo depicts the old, almost regal railway station, probably the most modern of all in whole of Yugoslavia, if not the Balkans. Kings would come, communist leaders will perch on its balcony and enflame the masses down, Simplon-Orient Express trains in persian-blue will pass by with English ladies sipping their Earl Gray tea on the road to Istanbul and we would be so very excited entering the trains which would carry us to the big wild West.
That is where my and the fabulous trip of 29 other students and James Leach as a guide, had begun one very late September 1963. (Please note that the beginning and the end of this journey reads 1973 respectively 1974: it is no mistake, the software does not accept dates so far back in time). But let me describe Skopje of some 43 years ago. Then I will continue to Munich, Oostend, London, Manchester, Stratford upon Avon, Brighton, Paris, Geneve, Milan and Venice. More thumbnails ...
