My Best Prepared Family Trip

After four years in Athens and despite the many travels to Macedonia, Cyprus, Egypt and Israel with extensive trips around the islands and the mainland of Greece, not only myself but the whole family had begun to accommodate itself to a notion that this was it, that this is how our life will continue. But my tenure was ending and I needed to prepare us all that we have to think to be (excluding my daughter Irina, who had to stay longer to complete her high-school) back in Skopje by early autumn. We needed to see and feel that there is life, exciting, rich and very rewarding outside of Athens.

That is how I decided to make a tour in and around Switzerland. It was to begin in Zurich and then include as many places of interest as possible with tangential excursions to Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy and France before we returned back to Paleo Psichico and begin packing, eventually with the help of my son who was completing his obligatory army duty by the end of August.

I did design the route but my devoted secretary Orthodoxia Matsi checked and re-checked everything, sent and received telexes (those were funny, real-thing, noisy machines if you remember, something like telefaxes now compared with e-mail) all in triplicate and we were all set after a month of her hard work. This reservation and confirmation part of any preparation for a smooth trip is most important stuff that you need if you travel on a budget, no matter how fat.
