While I try to figure out how this site works, my intention is to first outline some of my trips around the globe, so that you have a general image what a schmuck of a traveller I have been through so many years. Some of these trips were executed on my own and I was all alone, like reporting from the earthquake stricken Peru (Chimbote) but also discovering Lima and other famous places in the land of the Incas. Other trips involved the whole family or only my wife or only my son or my daughter. Very pleasant memories and exciting experiences derive from trips with single friends or colleagues - whether for pure pleasure or on reporting assignments to Zaire, now Congo and other African countries. There were also complex trips, well planned caravans of two-three-four families driving away over the United States and Canada during the Olympics and/or Bicentenial celebrations.
Thus - this is just an intro.

The actual text, to come latter, will be dedicated to Arras in Picardy.

It takes just about three hours tough driving from Amstelveen (via Utrecht) to reach Arras without entering either Antwerpen (Anvers), Gent or Lille. Earlier, 5-6 year ago, I could do that without feeling fatigue, but the 330 km. ride at 110 km/h average speed is now not only a heavy burden but totally pointless and - dangerous. So, better allow yourself another hour, use it for a coffee break and arrive in Arras just before you had it enough.

I know Antwerpen, Gent and Lille (will be entries on those places elsewhere) just as much as I know Arras which may imply that I could skip it too. But then I am not a Schoemacher. And I love the atmosphere of this very relaxing place.
