THE GAME
Entry 7 of 24 | show all | print this entry |
I am now a believer. I finally understand why the world is obsessed with Soccer and it only took ONE night to win me over. Attending Saturday night's World Cup match between the U.S. and Italy in Kaiserslautern, Germany, was the most fun I have ever had at a sporting event, and the U.S. didn't even win. They tied 1-1, if you didn't know, but had the winning goal called back and were lucky to tie after having 2 men sent off in the second half.
TV does an injustice to soccer because it is a trillion times better to see in person. It was so much better than I ever could have expected. We arrived in the small town midday and and the whole town was abuzz with Italians, Americans and Germans, with tickets and without, all just excited about the game. The city streets were taken over by food and beer stands, people, memorabilia shops, etc. Huge screens enabled us to watch the early games and we went to the stadium about 2 hours before kickoff. I only wish we had more World Cup tickets. I will definitely try to go to South Africa in 4 years to see it again and you're welcome to come with me. It was great not only because of the nonstop action, sheer craziness of the fans, heartstopping plays, but because it is such a rare event. Your team only plays 3-5 games every 4 years, the rarest of events, so to get 1 chance to go in a lifetime is an amazing opportunity.
Now hopefully the U.S. can beat Ghana next and Italy can beat Czech so we can get to the Round of 16 and lose to Brazil. Only a boy can hope. It was better than I can express in words and will tell you all about when I get home.
