Munich
Entry 6 of 24 | show all | print this entry |
Well we finally found a good meal on our last night in Prague as we randomly stopped in a local brew house near our crappy hostel which had one bathroom for 24 people. We ended up eating venison and ordering a 4 liter tube of beer for the 4 of us (we were still with Jed and Seth at that point), and we met a pair of Swiss couples who were fun to talk to.
Anyways, we left for Munich the next morning and when we finally arrived 6 hours later, went on Mike's Bike Tour. Tours are a great way to begin you adventure in every city, and even though our guide was brand new and didn't know that much, we saw most of the city, which would take us many more hours to do on foot. The highlight of Munich is the city center at Marienplatz, but also the English Gardens, which is twice the size of central park and has a huge beer garden in the middle that serves food, liters of good wheat beer, and a huge tv screen to watch the World Cup. We arrived during an England game, so thousands of drunk English hooligans were there cheering on their nation.
The night ended with a trip to Hofbrauhaus, a huge beer house in the center of Munich where Hitler once gave speeches to the Bavarian people. The house was full of American, British and Australian soccer fans who also got into many fights, but just simply had a great time yelling that their squad was the best. Erin Jones and Annais were spotted at the Hofbrauhaus. It is strange to run into people you know half a world away when you barely ever see them at home. And for all the GBN folk, I forgot to mention a sighting of Marni S., Gary S. and Susie P. on a street in Amsterdam. If you can't figure out who it is, it's probably because you don't know them.
Our second day in Munich began with a trip to Dachau, the concentration camp which is only 30-40 minutes outside of Munich. We again went on a guided tour and it was very interesting. We are taught for so long how horrible the Holocaust was, and we've seen the Holocaust museums, but it really doesn't hit you until you see the tiny overcrowded pieces of wood called beds, the gas chambers, the crematoria and the rest. Go see a camp, it will be interesting, and it will make us all never forget.
Our time in Munich ended with a trip out to the Olympic Stadium used during the infamous 1972 games and where this year's FIFA Fan Fest is being held. We also went to shabbat dinner at the local Chabad house in Munich. It was Phil's idea, and a good, free dinner like we all enjoy at our local campus chabad houses. Our first kosher meal all trip.
Munich had the best beer of the trip so far, but I still liked Berlin more. More to come.
