As said, we were very disheartened to see the ruin that was left by the invaders of WWII and the total disregard for the precious masterpieces and property of the Russian people.
Catherine's summer palace was immense and the overall feeling that you get from this visit is that this is a very rich country. Until you move beyond the main roads and the tourist areas. As we went to our last stop for the day, I asked our driver, Vladimir, to take us down a typical street off of the highway. We randomly chose a street and found old barn style houses, unkempt yards and a much different view of the area. While the country is a place of wealth and beauty, it still seems to be made up clearly of the haves and the have-nots.
All in all, the impressiveness of the place is such that it deserves a visit by any curious traveler.
