We made it back to Atlanta only to encounter a few more surprises. First of all, a fantastic article appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about my family history research. I was interviewed several days before our departure for this trip, but wasn't sure when the article would appear in the paper. To my delight, it showed up in the commemorative issue on the day after the inauguration. I must say, it really topped off the trip for me.

However, there is more excitement for the Globetrotters. Anita's birthday surprise is not over yet. Before leaving for Washington, DC, I spoke with a close personal contact who has a few connections within the Trumpet Awards Foundation to see if Anita and I could attend this year's awards show. I had lots of hope that this too would come through. So when Anita and I arrived back home, I got the news that we had indeed gotten two tickets to attend this year's Trumpet Awards at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center, Sunday, January 25, 2009.

Now I had to decide if I wanted to wait until the day before the event to let Anita know or tell her in advance. I decided to tell her on Friday and just as I figured, she couldn't believe we were going. She was so excited she immediately called and made a hair appointment for the next day, and started asking a bunch of questions. I told her as much as I needed to tell her about the event, but kept it a secret about my contact, who helped us secure the two VIP tickets.

Today is the big day. We are all set to go.  We plan to get there early to see all the celebrities and local "whose who" in Atlanta that are expected to be there. The Trumpet Awards is one of Atlanta's biggest social events of the year and anyone who is anyone from Atlanta will be there.      We met up with my sister Jane, then the three of us headed to the event, where many were already lined up along the red carpet to see the celebrities as they arrived. This was pretty exciting seeing all the frenzy taking place. Of course, we had to get our picture taken on the red carpet before heading inside.

Everyone was dressed in their finest attire. And of course, the Globetrotters were decked out to the "T" as well. I was pleasantly surprised to see the number of people who knew Jane, my baby sister, who lives in Atlanta. Jane knows Mrs. Xernona Clayton and has a pretty good relationship with a few of her personal staff.  Following her lead as we made our way into the Center as Jane led us to Tom Joyner's pre-event party.    As Jane was schmoozing the guests, Anita and I made ourselves comfortable making small talk with a few people.     Just then, I turned and saw the former United Nations Ambassador to the U.S., Andrew Young and his wife walk in. Anita happened to see Don, a business acquaintance of hers from San Diego.  Jane spotted another one of her friends, who I overheard ask Jane if we were going up to the special celebes' VIP party. Jane turned to Anita and I and asked if we wanted to go there to take a few more pictures. I couldn't believe she even had to ask! I turned and looked at Anita with a big smile and said, "Can we stand much more this evening"? Her reply to me was, "YES WE CAN!"

So on to the 12th-floor VIP reception we went. Now, this wasn't just any party pre-event party, but a special gathering for the 2009 Trumpet Awards recipients and past recipients.  We saw Radio One's CEO Cathy Hughes, actor Lou Gossett, Jr., CNN-TV personality Rolin Martin, several of the surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen, and actor Chris Tucker, just to name a few.  I  have to say, I was pleasantly surprised to be in the close company of so many whom I've only seem or heard of via television or radio.

The 2009 Trumpet Awards is expected to air across the country on April 12, 2009. Taping of the awards show lasted about three hours and afterwards Jane took us to the official after party at the Hyatt Regency downtown, entitled "A Soulful Ending." And soulful it was, with a menu that included some good down-home southern soul food. After dinner, it was time to head to the dance floor. I was pretty lucky to have two beautiful ladies (Anita and Jane) to dance the night away with.

Following that, Jane escorted us to Mrs. Clayton's private suite for a night cap and a little intellectual discussion with a few of her friends. Jane and Anita sat down, clearly planning to stay awhile because they both quickly took off their shoes. I thought to myself, both of them are getting rather comfortable, or this was just a "women thing" after having danced all night in high-heeled shoes. We were later joined by about 20 others, including comedian Dick Gregory, who's conversation had us all captivated for several hours.  Somehow, 2:00 a.m. crept upon us, and it was definitely time for Cinderella (Anita and me) to go home.

This wonderful evening would become the last part of a great and memorable week. The surprise package both Anita and I experienced included MLK's celebration and President Barack Obama's Inauguration in Washington DC. Truly a nice birthday surprise for Anita this year. You can be sure this one will be pretty hard to top next year. Stay tuned, I'm up for that challenge too.
